Stories of Inuit-led Conservation
On March 17, 2022 we co-hosted a dialogue with the IISAAK OLAM Foundation, the Torngat Secretariat and the Arctic Eider Society to explore stories and experiences of Inuit-led conservation initiatives in Labrador and Nunavut.
Dr. Jamie Snook (Torngat Secretariat) and Mr. Ron Webb (Knowledge Holder, and Environmental Consultant) shared their experiences with caribou conservation, including Inuit-led co-management boards and Torngat Mountain Caribou conservation initiatives
Lucassie Arragutainaq (Arctic Eider Society) and Joel Heath (Arctic Eider Society) discussed the establishment of Qikiqtait Indigenous-led protected area and the Hunters Nautsituqtiit Pilot Program in Nunavut. They also introduced SIKU: The Indigenous Knowledge Social Network. SIKU is a mobile app and web platform by and for Inuit. It provides tools and services for sharing hunting stories, ice safety, weather, and language preservation programs.
