Nature and Carbon: Opportunities and Challenges for Indigenous Leadership
On January 29th, 2021, the CRP and Anishinabe Business Professional Association—with support from Metcalf Foundation, Ecotrust Canada, David Suzuki Foundation, Ontario Nature, Anwaatin, Nature United and Bluesource—hosted the first webinar in he Natural Climate Solutions series.
Moderated by Jason Rasevych (Anishinabe Business Professional Association), the webinar brought together speakers from Indigenous organizations, the businesses community, and environmental organizations to showcase Indigenous-led natural climate solutions in Canada.
We were joined by managers of emerging forest management projects David Flood RPF, Wahkohtowin Development GP Inc., Chris Angeconeb (President and CEO AurCrest Gold Inc/Lac Seul First Nation) and Colin Shawinimash (Agoke Development Corp) to hear about the history and current standing for these emerging projects. The presenters explored how communities can participate in and benefit from business opportunities related to land stewardship. These opportunities can enable own-source revenue while reducing climate change impacts. These speakers were joined by technical practitioners Jamie MacKinnon (Bluesource) and Joseph Pallant (Ecotrust) who are working to maximize the community benefits of natural climate solutions for these projects.
Lastly, we were joined by Steven Nitah (Indigenous Leadership Initiative, CRP Leadership Circle) and Jenny Brown (Nature United) who shared about the connection between Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas and natural climate solutions. There is a huge opportunity in Canada for climate change measures. Similarly, there is a need for these solutions to be available on global markets to generate local benefits and foster resilient conservation-based economies. The webinar ended with a question and answer period.
